Consumption and the Common Good: Rental, Resale, Repair and Recycle
As a more critical discussion of the linear, take-make-waste model of clothing consumption has grown increasingly mainstream, fashion businesses have reconsidered business models predicated on increasing consumption. Businesses such as The RealReal, Thread Up, Renewal Workshop, and Rent the Runway have fundamentally rethought what it means to utilize or “consume” fashion and have enjoyed stellar growth with noteworthy funding interest.

What can we learn from the experiences of these companies? How might we view the destructive legacy of overconsumption as an opportunity to leverage an authentic commitment to sustainability as a strategy for differentiation in a crowded fashion market? What challenges persist and what innovations might be necessary?
GCNYC and the Center for Social Impact and Innovation is excited to present Consumption and the Common Good: Rental, Resale, Repair ,and Recycle, bringing together industry innovators to address these questions and engage in a discussion about redefining and recontextualizing fashion consumption as business opportunity to reduce negative impacts of the fashion industry.
